About Brendan Champion (NSW)

Brendan Champion is a Sydney based trombonist, composer/arranger and educator. In 2012 he completed his undergraduate at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music earning a Bachelor of Music with Honours majoring in jazz trombone performance. While at the Conservatorium, Brendan studied jazz trombone under the direction of Dave Panichi and James Greening, as well as studying classical trombone with Scott Kinmont, Associate Principal trombonist for the Sydney Symphony Orchestra.

  In 2012 Brendan arranged and performed for hip-hop artist Chance Waters on his single Young and Dumb, which reached #45 in the Triple J Hottest 100. In 2013, Brendan was a featured soloist with the Divergence Jazz Orchestra on their album The Opening Statement. He performs regularly with artists such as Jessica Mauboy and Sydney rock group Lime Cordiale, which has included national tours, TV appearances and music festivals such as Homebake, Bluesfest and Peats Ridge. One of Brendan’s current projects is Sydney-based New Orleans brass band The BRASSHOLES. Brendan has performed in stadiums for Taylor Swift and John Farnham, in symphony halls with the Australian Youth Orchestra and the Australian Philharmonia Choirs Orchestra and on parade with the NSW Police Band, as well as in the studio for the likes of Sony Music, Ms Murphy, Lionel Cole and Seekae. He has worked on cruise ships as a trombonist for Royal Caribbean International and currently holds the principal trombone position with the NSW Corrective Services Band. A keen composer and arranger, Brendan’s works are played regularly around Sydney. His composition Effie White can be heard on The Brassholes’ debut EP The Brassholes as well as on ABC TV as part of the #ourabc campaign. In 2014 two of Brendan’s big band compositions (The Search and Fake It ‘Til You Make It) were broadcast on ABC radio, performed by the Divergence Jazz Orchestra. As well writing his own compositions, Brendan has built a reputation for writing clear and accurate charts and has delivered hundreds of arrangements and transcriptions to musicians around Sydney. Brendan is a passionate music educator and enjoys teaching across all styles of music. He has been the trombone tutor for the Department of Education and Communities extra-curricular performing arts program – The Arts Unit – since 2009 and is the current trombone tutor at The Scots College and Fort Street High School and brass tutor at Meriden Anglican School for Girls
