Born on the 30th of October 1993, the youngest in a family of eight and with a half-Samoan Half-New Zealander background she moved from her home town Christchurch to Brisbane in 2015 where she started working as a barista but she never gave up on her dream of becoming a singer (she also plays the guitar).

Her music career started in early 2010, in this year she was granted with the second place in the “Find a Star” Talent Competition for a magazine show called “Good Morning” in New Zealand. With musical influences like India Arie and Lauryn Hill she decided to audition for the program The X Factor where she performed the song “Like a Star” by Corinne Bailey Rae. She accomplished to get a spot at the boot camp round in the competition, this time she sang “Young and Beautiful” by Lana del Rey, this performance granted her a ticket to London. At the UK auditions she performed Beyoncé’s “Drunk in Love” for her mentor Dani Minogue as well as guest’s judges Simon Cowell and Olly Murs. With this performance Minogue made her one of the three top performers for the live stream shows. At week three Mahalia ended up at the bottom three aside with participants Georgia Denton and Jimmy Davis, she was saved after Denton’s immediate elimination, then Judges Dani Minogue, Blunt and Sebastian cast votes to get Jimmy Davis eliminated. Later in week number five of the show, she was at the bottom two, this time with Michaela Baranov, Simpson was saved one more time by the elimination votes of the Judges Sebastian, Isaak and Blunt against Baranov, becoming Dani Minogue’s last protégé in the competition. On week six of the competition Mahalia got into the bottom two again, this time with Natalie Conway, she got saved by the votes of the Public. Simpson got her elimination on week seven against Big T.
