Dragon formed in New Zealand in 1973, initially comprised of Todd Hunter, guitarist Ray Goodwin, drummer Neil Reynolds, and singer Graeme Collins. Within a year, Marc Hunter joined as vocalist and Neil Storey replaced Reynolds on drums. The band's early years saw them release progressive rock albums like Universal Radio and Scented Gardens for the Blind. Later in 1974, Robert Taylor joined on guitar, marking a lineup change.
Relocating to Sydney in 1975, Dragon added keyboardist Paul Hewson to their ranks. They signed with CBS Records Australia and began working with producer Peter Dawkins. Tragically, drummer Neil Storey passed away in 1976, and Kerry Jacobson stepped in. Throughout the late 1970s, Dragon achieved major success on the Australian charts with hits such as "April Sun in Cuba," "Are You Old Enough," and "Still In Love With You," alongside albums like Sunshine and O Zambezi, solidifying their status as one of Australia's premier rock acts.
In 1979, Marc Hunter left due to health issues, leading to new members Billy Rogers (vocals) and Richard Lee (violin). The band released the Powerplay LP before disbanding. Marc Hunter pursued a successful solo career, while Todd Hunter teamed up with Johanna Pigott as a songwriting duo.
Dragon briefly reunited in 1982 to settle debts, but their comeback single "Rain" became a chart-topping hit. Changes in the lineup included Terry Chambers replacing Kerry Jacobson on drums and Alan Mansfield joining as keyboardist and producer. Their 1984 album Body and the Beat propelled Dragon back into the spotlight, with significant success in Australia and New Zealand.
Despite lineup changes over the years, including the departure of Paul Hewson and eventual additions of Doane Perry and Tommy Emmanuel, Dragon continued recording and touring. They collaborated with John Farnham on the hit song "Age Of Reason" in 1987. The band officially disbanded in 1988, but periodically regrouped, notably in 2006 with a lineup featuring Mark Williams, Bruce Reid, Todd Hunter, and Pete Drummond. This iteration released Sunshine to Rain and remains active touring Australia.
