Aidan Grimes holds the distinction of leading more groups across the Kokoda Track and the Black Cat Track for Our Spirit than any other individual or organisation. His leadership forms the cornerstone of our impeccable 100% safety and success record.
Aidan’s unparalleled knowledge of the terrain and his exceptional physical ability in this challenging environment set him apart. His profound understanding and insights into Australia's military history and campaigns are widely acknowledged. In 2012, Aidan was honoured with the "National RSL ANZAC of the Year Award" for his outstanding service to the Australian community, characterised by compassion, endurance, and dedication.
Recognised as an honorary member of the 2/14th and 2/16th Battalions, Aidan's deep respect for the Australian Military reflects his commitment to the freedoms enjoyed by our nation today. Along the Kokoda Track, local elders affectionately refer to him as Uda Baroma (Wild Pig) or Uda Lauma (The Spirit), highlighting their immense respect for him. This respect was further demonstrated when an elder from Vesulogo Village named his son after Aidan.
In November 2015, Aidan marked a monumental achievement by leading his 100th Kokoda trek during the centenary year of the ANZACs, culminating in Port Moresby for Remembrance Day. This historic accomplishment stands as a testament to Aidan's enduring commitment and expertise. On ANZAC Day 2019, Aidan was awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal by the Governor General of Papua New Guinea, recognising his exceptional service to PNG.
