Lilley first gained international acclaim in 2005 with his creation We Can Be Heroes, a mockumentary series that won him the international Rose d’Or Award for Best Male Comedy Performance, a Logie Award for Most Outstanding New Talent and Best Comedy Series, and the NSW Premier’s Literary Award for Best Script. The series also received four AFI nominations, including Best Comedy Series, Best Screenplay for Television, and Best Lead Male Actor. His next series, Summer Heights High, became Australia's highest-selling series of all time and earned Lilley the AFI Award for Best Comedy Series, Best Performance in a Television Comedy, and the Byron Kennedy Award, which honors outstanding creative enterprise and innovation in film and television.
In 2011, Lilley's third series, Angry Boys, premiered on ABC, BBC, and HBO, winning an ADG Award for Best Direction in TV Comedy and an AACTA Award for Best Performance in TV Comedy. This was followed by Ja’mie: Private School Girl and Jonah from Tonga, with Ja’mie receiving Logie Award nominations for Most Popular Actor, Most Popular Light Entertainment Program, and Outstanding Actor.
