About Matthew Johns

Australian international and New South Wales State of Origin representative five-eighth, Matthew Johns played most of his Rugby League career with the Newcastle Knights, winning its inaugural Premiership in 1997.

Following a year in the English Super League with prestigious club Wigan, and another with the Cronulla Sharks, Matthew embarked on a career in the media which has seen him become one of the most sought after hosts, Rugby League analysts and entertainers.

Currently the host of Fox League’s flagship television programs, ‘Sunday Night with Matty Johns’ and ‘The Late show with Matty Johns’, he also hosts the very popular ‘Matty Johns Podcast’ where he varies content between Rugby League analysis, a weekly podcast with the Johns Family and in-depth interviews with various personalities, from his ‘Matty Johns Face-to-Face’ Television show. Matthew’s engaging interviewing style earned him the prestigious News Award for ‘Interview of the Year’ in 2019, amongst a highly regarded field.

More recently Matthew has joined SEN Sydney with his ‘Morning Glory’ radio show, following 8 years of Breakfast Radio as an award-winning radio host on the Triple M Grill Team, which saw the highest ratings for the station in almost 20 years.

He is comfortable in front of the camera, behind a microphone, on stage, or putting pen to paper, having released two books in the past as well as writing a weekly Friday column for the Daily Telegraph.

There’s a string of well-loved characters the talented Novocastrian has created along the way including Don Kirk, Trent the Flight Steward and Mighty Mick Mathieson. But the most popular of these would undoubtedly be the ever-inappropriate Reg Reagan, who released a string of DVDs, as well as receiving an ARIA nomination for his hit song. 2007 saw Matthew make his major acting debut starring in the Australian movie, ‘The Final Winter’, as coach Jack Cooper.

Matthew has kept his hand in Rugby League over the years, being employed by Craig Bellamy as a consultant to the Melbourne Storm, working closely with Cooper Cronk, helping develop him into a highly regarded international halfback.

Highly articulate, engaging and entertaining, Matthew Johns is in demand as a corporate keynote speaker, as well as being able to dissect the game of Rugby League and tell some fascinating anecdotes along the way. Described as “the most brilliant mind in Rugby League,” with his quick-witted humour, Matthew is also in demand as an MC.
