Michael Usher has had a diverse and extensive career in broadcast journalism, starting as a final-year cadet at Golden West Television Network in 1990. He held various positions in Bunbury and Kalgoorlie before joining STW9 Perth. In 1993, Michael moved to TCN 9 in Sydney, where he reported on the 1996 Atlanta Olympics and led the coverage of the 2000 Sydney Olympics, as well as two subsequent Olympic and Commonwealth Games. His career took an international turn in 2001 when he became a correspondent for Nine Network’s US Bureau, and in 2004, he covered Europe and the Middle East from the London Bureau.
Michael reported on major global events such as the September 11 terrorist attacks, the subway bombings in London and Madrid, the Iraq war, the death of Pope John Paul II, and the Colombia Space Shuttle disaster. Returning to Australia in 2006, he presented Nightline and became the news presenter for the Sunday program in 2007. He joined 60 Minutes as a permanent member in 2009 after filing reports as a contractor in 2008 and hosted the first leaders’ debate between Julia Gillard and Tony Abbott before the 2010 Australian Federal Election.
In 2021, after 25 years with Channel 9, Michael transitioned to the 7 Network as their Presenter/Weekend News reader to be based more in Sydney to be closer to his children.
