Peter Mitchell is a familiar face to viewers of Seven Nightly News in Melbourne. With a career spanning over three decades in television news, Peter has served as a reporter, producer, and presenter.
Raised in Victoria with two brothers, Peter developed a keen interest in sports, particularly football and cricket. His passion for sports led him to join Channel Nine's Sport News Department in 1981. During this time, he also took up golf, which suited his new working hours well.
Peter's career at Channel Nine included covering significant events like the Brisbane 1982 Commonwealth Games and Australia's victory in the Americas Cup in September 1983. In February 1981, Peter moved to Seven Melbourne as the weekend news presenter, where he remained for nearly thirteen years. One of his most memorable moments was breaking the news of Princess Diana's death during AFL coverage on August 31, 1997.
Since 2001, Peter has been the anchor for Seven Nightly News in Melbourne, a position he held under contract until the end of 2014. He has also taken on the role of entertainment reporter for Melbourne Weekender, a lifestyle program showcasing leisure activities in and around the city. Peter embraced this opportunity to diversify his responsibilities and has enjoyed the challenge.
Beyond his broadcasting career, Peter's love for golf has influenced his writing pursuits. He authored a biography of golfer Peter Thompson, a five-time winner of the British Open, and writes a column called "Tee for Two" for the Herald Sun. Outside of work, Peter enjoys spending time with his wife Philippa and their five children on their semi-rural property on the Mornington Peninsula, often relaxing with a glass of red wine.
