Try playing new & original Australian music, influenced by whatever and by whomever.
The major ethnic influences are from Asia, particularly Indonesia & japan. It is intentional not to emphasise the more heavily profiled percussive traditions of Africa & Latin America though they are there also.
Try are a high energy-drumming ensemble, yet they also aim to create something visually striking. To that end there is much attention paid to movement, stance and overall group configuration. The physical movements serve to punctuate rhythm, fulfil emotion & create a visual spectacle that increases the appeal for a wider (generally non-musically trained) audience.
The choreographed approach has evolved naturally yet is linked to rendra's background in in martial arts, martial percussion, dance choreography, west Sumatran randai theatre and Japanese taiko drumming.
The music is approximately 80 % written, 20% improvised and multi-faceted in totality. Totality includes the song structures, vocal parts, physical movements, improvisation and the rhythms that make up a composition.
It is very exciting music, both to watch & play.
