About Waleed Aly

Waleed Aly is widely regarded as one of Australia’s most esteemed and multifaceted media figures. He holds roles as a broadcaster, author, academic, and musician, prominently co-hosting Network Ten’s nightly live show, The Project. In 2014, Waleed was honoured with the prestigious Walkley Award for Commentary, Analysis, Opinion, and Critique.

His tenure on The Project saw him swiftly achieve acclaim, winning the 2016 Gold Logie Award for Most Popular Australian TV Personality and the Silver Logie Award for Best Presenter within his first year. He further solidified his presence with the 2016 Andrew Olle Media Lecture and subsequent Silver Logie wins in 2017 and nominations for the Gold Logie in 2017 and 2019.

Beyond his television successes, Waleed has explored comedy on SBS’s Salam Café, delivered incisive news on ABC radio’s Mornings program in Melbourne, and provided expert analysis on ABC News 24’s The Drum, Q&A, and BBC World. He hosted The Late Session on SBS in 2010, engaging audiences in dynamic discussions. In 2019, Waleed co-hosted Australia Talks, a significant live TV event exploring national survey results, alongside Annabel Crabb.

Recognised for his advocacy and community engagement, Waleed became a White Ribbon Day Ambassador in 2005 and was named Victoria’s Local Hero in the Australian of the Year Awards in 2011 for his efforts in promoting cross-cultural understanding. He has received various accolades including the Voltaire Award for Free Speech and the United Nations Association of Australia Media Peace Award for Social Cohesion.

As an author, Waleed penned People Like Us: How Arrogance is Dividing Islam and the West, which garnered several award nominations. His contributions extend to co-authoring I Know This to Be True, a book series with the Nelson Mandela Foundation, and collaborating on Bachar Houli’s memoir. Notably, Waleed made his Melbourne International Comedy Festival debut in 2013 and currently co-hosts The Minefield on Radio National with ethicist Scott Stephens.

His latest work, the Quarterly Essay Uncivil Wars: How Contempt Is Corroding Democracy, co-written with Stephens, was published in September 2022. Waleed also serves as a lecturer in politics at Monash University, where he contributes to the Global Terrorism Research Centre, showcasing his dedication to scholarship and public discourse.
