Traditionally, dance flash mobs are when a group of people assemble in a public place to wow the crowd with an eye-catching dance routine. The first known flash mob took place in New York, New York, when Bill Wasik, a senior editor of Harper's Magazine, encouraged people to gather at Macy's Department Store.
